UNIO and Pfaffmann Vineyard Complete Successful Pilot for Smarter, More Sustainable Agriculture
In late August, UNIO Enterprise concluded a commercial pilot project with Weingut Heinz Pfaffmann in Walsheim and Bachhus Software, showcasing how always-available connectivity can make vineyard operations smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable.
Pfaffmann’s teams face significant connectivity challenges in the fields, including unreliable coverage and inefficient GNSS positioning. These issues make precise fertilisation and seamless digital workflows difficult. More critically, crop protection, an essential part of vineyard management, was often hindered by these technical barriers, adding unnecessary complexity to daily operations.
To address these challenges, UNIO deployed UNIO Move, its hybrid connectivity solution designed for demanding agricultural environments. The technology combines seamless, network-agnostic connectivity with AI-driven NTN–TN switching, ensuring operations run reliably, efficiently, and with greater accuracy.
Over the course of 151.7 hours of testing across nine days, Pfaffmann’s tractors and vineyard operations were benchmarked against the solution. The results were clear:
-
Reliability: Outstanding performance with approximately 99% terrestrial network uptime and no major outages
-
Latency: Strong baseline of 23–26 milliseconds, with only a few severe outliers
-
Traffic Handling: Stable overall, with bursts up to 1 MB/s proving robustness under stress
These outcomes demonstrate that hybrid connectivity can significantly improve operational reliability in agriculture, supporting sustainability goals and enabling more advanced digital applications in the field.
UNIO extends its thanks to Philipp Bletzer and Jochen Laqué for their dedication to driving this project forward at Pfaffmann.
“Companies like Pfaffmann, who care deeply about sustainability and are eager to innovate hand-in-hand with small startups, are absolutely key to driving meaningful change in agriculture,” said Katrin Bacic, CEO of UNIO Enterprise.
